With the invasion of China in Tibet in 1959, some 85000 tibet population with their Dalai Lama flew to Odisha and with the Indian Govt. Resettlemtent Act they have been provided a land in Chandragiri in the district of Gajapati , which they called “Phuntsokling”. Since 1960 they are living here in peace in the midst of picturesque countryside surrounded by hills, spring and greenery.

The main attraction of this place is Padmasambhava Mahavihara Monastery which is Asia’s Largest monastery. It was inaugurated by present Dalai Lama in 2010. It has one 23 feet high golden Buddha statue. The monastery has a big prayer hall. And it has the facility to accommodate 200 residential Buddhist monks which is one of the best things in spreading Buddhism. Moreover Padmasambhava Mahavihara Monastery is a bonus to anyone who wants to do research on Buddhism.
Another specialty of this place that will pull you is Tibetan culture and tradition. The Tibetan populations here have preserved their culture and tradition as it is in Tibet. They wear their traditional dresses, eat their traditional food and they earn their livelihood by doing traditional occupations like carpet weaving, farming and woolen cloth weaving. Everywhere you will feel the fragrance of Tibetan ethnicity and tradition. You will have the experience of real Tibet in Odisha. Is not it amazing?
